The Everglades
Most people end up coming to the Kissimmee area (just south of Orlando) for the theme parks – Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Gatorland, Walt Disney World, and all the smaller denominations thereof. But here are some other ideas for things to do in Kissimmee (that don’t necessarily involve enormous lines of people):
Old Town is a shopping emporium with a huge variety of places to browse, as well as the famous Car Cruises, live entertainment, and rides (including a ropes course, laser-tag and tilt-a-whirl). Admission is free to get in, and it’s not a bad place to consider hanging out on the weekend. The nearby picture-perfect town of Celebration, originally planned out by the Disney Development Company, also has some quaint stores for shopping – and it has renowned places to eat and drink. Check the events schedule for upcoming festivals and concerts.
To get around the areas near Kissimmee in a more adventurous way, you could do a hot-air balloon ride or an airplane tour, go horseback riding, do a zip-line, race go-karts or ride on an airboat. The Everglades, Lake Toho (Tohopekaliga), and numerous hiking trails offer promising days of leisure with bass fishing, kayaking, camping, or exploring on foot. The weather of Central Florida is fit for year-round golfing. If you feel like your swing could benefit from a tip or two, check out some of the golf academies nearby that specialize in showing people how to make the best of the ample, pro-level courses.
